Wastewater Treatment Facility

The city of Los Osos is without a cohesive wastewater treatment system. The excessive number of individual septic tanks has poisoned the local soil causing a city wide construction moratorium. We were required to solve this problem through bioremediation techniques.

My initial concepts centered on the ideals of sustainability. I did not want to destroy the ecology of the site in order to create the center. Protecting the existing trees greatly reduced the site area. This drove an increasingly innovative use of space, how to stack program elements without reducing the solar access necessary to the bioremediation process. The spaces created also needed to draw in the local community and provide a relaxing parklike environment. The final design is eligible to be LEED Platinum.
